Airport Full-Body Scanners And Radiation

Amid concerns of terrorists targeting planes with weapons less detectable by conventional means in terms of, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) increased efforts to ensure the security of full body scanners at airports in the U.S. .. These systems produce anatomically correct images of the body and can detect concealed objects and substances of clothing.

To date, TSA deployed two types of scanning systems:

Millimeter wave technology uses radio waves at low frequencies to millimeter wave frequencies. Two rotating antennas, from head to foot passengers with low power RF.

Backscatter technology uses low X-ray emitting less than 10 to scan microrems radiation - the equivalent of radiation received during the two minutes of a plane from 30,000 feet.

A passenger plane flying across the country are exposed to radiation more than the flight of selecting one of these devices. National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) reported that a passenger who needs to experience the 2500 backscatter scans a year to achieve what they classify as insignificant individual doses. American College of Radiology (ACR), in agreement with this conclusion.

ACR is not aware of any evidence that one of TSA explore technologies that are considered as important biological effects on passenger screening.
