Goals of chemotherapy

* Total remission - the patient to recover completely. In some cases, chemotherapy alone can remove all the cancer.

* Combination therapy - chemotherapy may help other treatments such as surgery or radiotherapy, more effective results.

* Delay / prevent recurrence - chemotherapy, when used to prevent the return of a cancer, is usually used after a tumor surgically removed. Scientists from the Charité School of Medicine, Germany, found that the use of the drug gemcitabine for chemotherapy significantly delays the return of cancer, compared with no chemotherapy.

* Slow cancer progression - mainly used when the cancer is advanced and a cure is unlikely. Chemotherapy can slow the progress of the cancer.

* To relieve symptoms - more often used for patients with advanced cancer.
